Field Notes: Celebrate World Environment Day by Journaling in the Wild

World Environment Day is the perfect day for anyone to pick up their pen and paper and journey into the world of nature journaling.

Not sure where to start? We've got you covered with these tips and tricks!

Get outside and explore!

There's no better way to begin nature journaling than to get outside and explore the natural world around you.Take a hike in the woods, go for a walk in the park, or even just sit in your backyard and take in the sights and sounds of nature. Pay attention to the details and really try to see everything around you.

Once you've taken some time to really soak everything in, find a comfortable spot to sit down and start writing or drawing in your journal.

Look for patterns.

One of the things that makes nature so interesting is the way that patterns emerge everywhere you look. From the spirals of a seashell to the stripes of a zebra, nature is full of beautiful patterns. See if you can find some patterns in the natural world around you and document them in your journal.

Track the changes over time.

One of the great things about nature journaling is that it allows you to track changes over time. If you journal regularly, you'll be able to look back and see how plants have grown and changed, how animals have migrated, and how the seasons have come and gone. It's a great way to really appreciate the beauty of nature and the way that it constantly evolves.

Share your journal with others.

Once you've filled your journal with all sorts of nature-themed goodness, don't keep it to yourself—share it with others! Show your friends and family what you've been up to, or even better, share it with the world by posting it online. Who knows, you might just inspire someone else to start their own nature journal

Draw what you see.

Another great way to nature journal is to draw what you see. If you're not an artist, don't worry! Nature journaling is all about recording your observations, not about creating masterpieces. Simply sketching the things that you see can be a great way to record information and also help you to remember it later.

Write what you know.

In addition to drawing, another great way to nature journal is to write about your experiences. What did you see on your walk? What did you hear? What did you smell? How did it make you feel? Writing about your experiences can help you to connect with nature on a deeper level and also document your observations for later reference.

Take photographs.

If drawing and writing aren't your thing, another great option for nature journaling is taking photographs. Photographs can be a great way to capture the beauty of nature and also document specific details that you want to remember later. Just be sure to also include written descriptions of the things that you photograph so that you can remember them later.

Collect specimens.

Finally, another fun way to nature journal is to collect specimens of the things that you find. This could include leaves, flowers, berries, seeds, shells, rocks, or anything else that catches your eye. Once you've collected your specimens, you can press them into your journal or create a collage with them. Or, if you're feeling really adventurous, you could even try taxidermy!

Be creative!

Your nature journal doesn't have to be all serious business—have some fun with it! Use your journal as a place to experiment with different art styles or writing techniques. Draw inspiration from your surroundings and let your creativity flow.

Happy journaling!
